The bigger they were, the more they were sought after. Both stumpers and ball bearings counted more when we were playing marbles. Some kids had it down to a fine art, but quite often I lost and would end up buying some more from the local shop. At the end of the season, which I think was just before the summer holidays, one of the bigger kids who’d won most of the marbles would shout ‘scrambles’ and chuck all his marbles for the other kids to try and get. We all loved basketball at the time because of the Harlem Globetrotters. Most of us just knew them from the cartoon on the TV. We also had cross-country. Every school at the time had a PE teacher who was a bully and ours was no different. It was no fun getting your ear or hair pulled, or having inane comments shouted in your lugholes.
