Ray – Navy Cross Citation Captain Eddie S. Ray, United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as CO, Company B, First Light Armored Infantry Battalion, Task Force Shepherd, FIRST Marine Division, in the Emirate of Kuwait on 25 February 1991. During the early morning hours of G+1 of Operation Desert Storm, an Iraqi mechanized division counter-attacked elements of the FIRST Marine Division in the vicinity west of the flame and smoke engulfed Burgan Oil Fields in Southeastern Kuwait.

Just after the company was in position, 20 Iraqi vehicles assaulted the formation. Marine TOW missiles destroyed 11 enemy vehicles. Captain Shupp’s Company A was ordered to take Company D’s position at OP-4. They looked for survivors of the A-10 friendly fire incident and found the driver of Red Two (its call sign) alive but wounded. The crews noticed a large formation of Iraqi vehicles on the Kuwait side of the border. Instead of waiting for another attack on OP-4, Captain Shupp had his LAV-ATs fire a volley of TOW missiles, destroying two tanks.
