In this ebook i've got geared toward completeness within the experience that each one guides recognized to me, that are entirely or in part dedicated to Malay and Bahasa Indonesia (B.I.), or are very important for the examine of those languages, were integrated. well known guides in non-professional periodicals were incorporated in basic terms incredibly. all of the courses pointed out within the textual content are included within the Bibliography (p. 91-157). The numerous articles in 4 post-war, semi-professional periodicals in :'1alaya and Indonesia, Dewan Bahasa, Pembina Bahasa Indonesia. 11:1 edan Bahasa, Bahasa dan Budaja, aren't pointed out individually within the Bibliography, yet sections 33 to 36 include a survey, as whole and systematic as attainable, of the contents of those periodicals in as far as they pertain to the Malay language; nor have i mentioned within the textual content or integrated within the Bibliography numerous enormous quantities of titles of useful textbooks or school-books of Malay or B.I. that are of no significance to the clinical research of those language. those titles were entered in a separate Appendix (p. 158--171). the truth that completeness used to be geared toward definitely doesn't suggest that it's been completed. in particular quite a few fresh writings from Indonesia and Malaya can have escaped my cognizance. event has additionally proved that guides on Malay occasionally look within the such a lot unforeseen areas. The qualification above: "publications ... dedicated to ... , or impor tant for the examine of" Malay and B.I. has been taken in a large sense.

Winstedt composed a summary classification of cases of word duplication or 30 repetition with sound variation (1917a), of which Zainal Abidin made a large collection (1927). Emeis wrote a study of what he un justifiably called "the vowel harmony" of Malay words (1955). The first and, to my knowledge, only attempt to examine the frequence of usage of Malay words, mainly in Malaya proper, was made by Prevost (1953), the subject of fundamental criticism by Manning (1956). I shall deal with toponyms and proper names below (section 25).
Then there are all sort of popular writings and, above all, the newspapers which employed this form of language; I mention especially the Keng Po and the Sin Po, but refer otherwise to the articles mentioned above and to the writings named in the section on Jakarta Malay, which often deal wholly or partly with the Chinese Malay of Jakarta, which is, at any rate in writing, not very distinct from 'real' Jakarta Malay. , Jakarta and Chinese Malay have, in their written forms at least, very much grown together.
Wulff gave a very detailed, phonetic description of the Perak dialect - its foundation is unsatisfactory, but the work is interesting, incidentally for Malay in general, on account of the scarcity of such data (1926). A much older article, by R. L. Lloyd, on the sounds of Malay dialects in Lower Siam, is interesting, for, in addition to details on the phonology, he gives word accents and much data also on the structure of the pantun (1921). The only publication I know on the subject of Baba Malay, "the business language of the Malay Peninsula", but also the native language of many Straits-born Chinese, is an article by Shellabear (1913), which contains much interesting data; the author was apparently unacquainted with comparable Indonesian material.
