These women were also exceptional in terms of their involvement in activities outside their families. Most of the women who participated in the study had worked outside their homes for pay at some point in their lives. Most daughters were currently employed, whereas most of the mothers were not. Even after retiring, the mothers maintained busy schedules of travel, senior activities, and volunteer work. One challenge of the study involved pinning the mothers down to meet for an interview before they jaunted off to Africa or between charity drives for the homeless.
Specifically, this study addresses the rewards and costs that mothers and daughters incur in their relationships in old age. Mothers and daughters report mixed feelings about their relationships. There are three aspects to these feelings. First, the actual emotions that mothers and daughters experience for the other party contribute to the intensity of their bonds (Troll & Fingerman, 1996). A central focus of this study involved the types of feelings that mothers and daughters report for the other party.
Many of the other children returned home for vacations during their college or postgraduate training. In summary, on average, these mother/daughter dyads consisted of an elderly woman who did not work, but who was healthy and active in outside activities, and who, more often than not, came home to an empty house. The dyads also included a middle-aged woman who worked full-time, came home to a husband or lover, one or two children, and also faced demands from an additional adolescent or young adult offspring not residing with her.
