Example text

Once photography has broken away from its original function as technique or means for documentation, it is merely a fleeting state of existence that has been transformed into one possible reality. It is this transformation that makes photography a kind of movement and gives it its distinctive significance: it is merely one type of existence. Life is merely an undisputable fact, and the production of an alternate reality is another kind of truth that shares no genuine relationship to reality. Both are waiting for something miraculous to occur—the reexamination of reality.

This is not some cultural choice—just as life is not a choice—this is a concern for one’s own existence, the cornerstone of all mental activities; it is cognition, the ultimate goal. Reflections on modes of existence and mental values are core issues in modern art, facing the vivid and distinct facts—the inevitability of life and death. After primal impulses have passed, such reflections leave a hollow, dreary sense of reality behind. All of this develops toward an inevitable conclusion: an understanding of the solemnity and absurdity of life.

To understand space is to be human. To better understand the potential of space and its related events, you can examine a leaping cat, or the raising of a flag. A builder’s grasp of space and of the possibilities for formulating space reveals his understanding and interpretation of himself and what lies outside himself. This is the recognition of limits, and a feeling of restraint. When people attempt to understand existence outside of humankind, including a prehuman age and what will be a posthuman age, puzzlement ensues.
